Thanksgiving Day Diet Massacre

Weighed in this morning at 153 pounds, up another pound from my last post on Tuesday.

That makes a total of three pounds I gained this week, after falling to my target weight of 150 back on Nov 17th. Thanksgiving started on Wednesday, Nov 24th for me when my brother and his wife visited. We went out to eat and we celebrated a combination Thanksgiving, as well as his birthday.

Of course I ate myself silly on Thanksgiving.

So now I'm back to my usual routine. I did my jog this morning.

If you recall back on October 31st, I posted that my wife had been in the hospital. She's fully recovered now, from a kidney transplant. Earlier this week her doctor cleared her to leave home. She had been quarantined in here due to being on immunosuppresants. She still has to be careful about going into crowded places and being around kids and animals.

But she's itching to get out, which means going out to eat. So, I have to keep going on with my exercises.

Weight Loss By Desire

Weighed in this morning at 152 pounds. Up two pounds from my last report a week ago.

As the days grow closer to Thanksgiving, it's becoming more tough to stick to this diet. Everywhere I look, I see photos of turkey dinners, pumpkin pie, and people being festive and merry. It seems to trigger something deep down inside me that wants to break open a bottle of beer, grill some steaks, or eat a pint of ice cream.

Compounding that is the colder weather. I hate jogging with cold air blowing on my face. Even though running will raise my body temperature, I still feel that bitter cold windchill. And so I don't feel encouraged to exercise.

I guess these are the moments where you learn what you're made of. I tell people I spent a few years alone just trying to control my appetite. I like to think that I've made progress on that. Yet maybe no matter what you do, there's always going to be something that Mother Nature puts into us that makes us want to eat.

The body always thinks it's living in the wild, trying to survive from one day to the next. But our conscience knows that food is readily available without the need to expend a lot of physical activity.

That seems to be the root of everyone's weight problems. It's a tug-of-war between our body's natural mechanisms and our desires to satiate our palates.

I hear some vegans and vegetarians say that they have lost the desire to eat meat. I always wonder about that. I'm not a vegetarian, though I do love eating fruit, vegetables, and grains. Yet, I have to believe that even vegans still possess these natural tiggers deep in their psyche that makes a rack of pork ribs look and smell absolutely irresistible.

But I think vegans have the power of ideology, and their stable of vegans friends to help them stick to their lifestyle. As for myself, I don't have any ideology that turns a carnivorous diet into something criminal, and nor do I have any dieting friends to pull me along.

All I have is a desire to stay healthy. And so far my desire to stay healthy is often trumped by my desire to eat and eat and eat. When your entire weight loss efforts are driven simply by a desire, it's tough to stay the course.

Shooting for 145 Pounds

Weighed in this morning at 150 pounds. That's down one pound from my last report on Saturday.

150 pounds is my target weight, and what I've deemed my base weight.

I'm still eating about 1,000 calories a day, and still doing it on a whole wheat tortilla in the morning, two cans of Low Sodium V8 Juice, 4-8oz of beef jerky, and a handful of celery stalks with salsa in the evening. And I'm still exercising via light weightlifting and jogging about 1.3 miles Monday through Friday.

Except I'm not going to hold up at 150 pounds. I'm going to keep on going with the above program, and try to add more muscle while trying to burn off what fat I still have hanging around my belly. So, I may possibly go down to 145 pounds, though I doubt I'll ever get below that. Right now, it's getting harder to lose weight, and it seems like I've put on just a little bit of muscle over the past month.

It's Getting Harder to Lose Weight

Weighed in this morning at 151 pounds, down one pound from last Tuesday.

I exercised all this week, Monday to Friday I jogged everyday on a 1.3 mile route, and I did some light weightlifting, along with sit-ups and push-ups. I kept my calorie intake to about 1,000 calories a day, eating mostly a whole-wheat tortilla and V8 juice for breakfast, about 4oz of jerky for lunch, and celery with salsa plus a can of V8 juice for dinner.

I notice it's getting harder to lose weight. Whereas before I would drop about 1-2 pounds a day doing exactly what I described above, it now takes about five days to drop the same amount. I assume I'm building up more muscle while I'm losing fat.

I'm getting more into making salsa. Last night I made some jalapeno tomatillo salsa. Tastes pretty good, but I can tell it's not "just right". So, I'm already eyeing a bigger food processor, and looking to try this again. There's actually lots of salsa to buy at my local grocery store, but I can't find any that's hot enough for me.

Today, being Saturday, I'm taking a break from exercising, and a break from my diet, and going out motorcycle riding. Sunday, I don't know what I'm doing, but most likely spending it with my wife. Maybe grill up some steaks. And then the next week, I'm back to my regular exercise and diet regimen.

I'm Smelling Like Garlic

Weighed in this morning at 152 pounds. I'm down one pound from Sunday morning.

I continue to exercise. My jogging route has increased to 1.3 miles. My goal is 2.0 miles everyday. I think that's what I need to do to burn off the visceral fat. I'm also still doing some weightlifting, not very strenuous stuff though, mostly easier stuff, just enough to prevent muscle-loss, and remain slender.

I also took another step in the right direction, by getting rid of all my larger clothes. I had kept them all, thinking that someday I'll probably gain a lot of weight back. But I decided that's not the right attitude. So all I have left now are the clothes that fit me just right.

Oh, and over the weekend I made some habanero-lime salsa. It turned out really hot. I ended up using a lot of garlic, and now it's very garlicky. As of this morning, my wife says I still smell like garlic, and I still have a couple pints of that salsa left.

Celery versus Tortilla Chips

Weighed in at 153 pounds this morning. Down one pound over the last week.

All last week I've done reasonably well to watch my calorie intake, particularly my sugar intake. Exercise has not been as frequent as it was the previous week, however. But interestingly enough, I managed to drop a pound.

My goal is to stay at 150 pounds.

It seems like I'm getting into salsa (the food, not the dance) more and more. I find myself at grocery stores examining the many brands that are available. I like stuff really hot.

I used to eat baked tortilla chips with salsa, but I'm actually finding celery stalks to be just as good or better in flavor. Well, tortilla chips by themselves don't have a lot of flavor to begin with, and neither does celery. So I think that's why the two work well with salsa.

But considering one full size stalk of celery contains only 10 calories, whereas 20 baked tortilla chips contains about 150 calories, and slightly more for regular tortilla chips, it's a lot better as a diet food.

So when snacking, I'll eat about 3 full size stalks of celery. Each stalk generates about 6-8 dips into salsa, that's roughly the same as what I would snack with tortilla chips.

The fiber content is pretty much the same between the two.

Controlling My Appetite So Far

Weighed in this morning at 154 pounds, no change from yesterday.

I managed to keep myself under control yesterday in terms of eating. I started the morning with my usual whole wheat tortilla (plain), and for lunch a BBQ chicken sandwich with macaroni salad and one bottle of beer at a restaurant.

I was still ready to eat some more just after finishing lunch, and could see some slices of sourdough bread a friend of mine didn't want to eat. But I resisted. I also resisted a second bottle of beer.

Later in the day some friends and I hit up a bar and I had a glass of beer. Everyone else was getting second glasses of beer, but again I managed to resist. Part of the reason was because I had to get back home to hand out candy for Halloween. And then at home, I managed to resist eating the Kit Kats and Twix Bars.

But later on, I couldn't resist eating some corn bread and chips and salsa.

Still, the bottom line is that I spent a day off of my diet, and didn't gain any weight from it. So that's the whole point of what I'm trying to do. Control my appetite so that I can maintain a healthy weight.

The Beef Jerky Diet Continues

To everyone still monitoring Beef Jerky Diet Blog, I'm still strutting along. My weight right now is at 154 pounds, and I'm still making beef jerky a main part of my daily diet.

I'm at a point right now where beef jerky is the main source of protein from Monday through Friday, and weekends I tend to substitute it with something else, maybe steak or chicken.

At one point, earlier this month, my weight went as high as 164. This is mostly because my wife was in the hospital at that time, and I wasn't able to spend much time writing my beef jerky reviews. I ended up eating out at a bar & grill close to the hospital.

Right now, my exercise regimen has picked back up. I'm back to jogging about 3/4 mile, along with some weight lifting, Monday through Friday, while doing sit-ups and push-ups seven days a week. This last week I've made exercise a daily habit, in hopes of burning off some of my pooch belly.

It still amazes me how many brands of beef jerky there is in the world. I've written reviews of over 230 brands thus far, and it seems there's no end in sight. Some of those brands have since gone out of business, but new ones seem to keep popping up.

Two Pounds on Jerky and Strawberries

Weighed in this morning at 152 pounds. Down two pounds from yesterday.

My diet yesterday consisted of 6oz of jerky, spread out over 3oz in afternoon, and 3oz in the evening. I also had a pound of strawberries in the morning, and another pound of strawberries in the afternoon. Then a few glasses of water.

No exercise, though I did some more cleaning on my motorcycle.

It's tough trying to get back into the swing of things. I keep thinking about the month-long ride I took to Alaska and back. Being out on the road for that many days is an adventure. Your mind switches into a different mode during that time. And then when you come back home, it takes awhile for your brain to switch back.

Dropped a Lot of Weight Overnight

Weighed in this morning at 154 pounds, down 4 pounds from yesterday.

Obviously when I weighed myself yesterday morning, I must have had a lot of water in me from the day before when I rode home from Las Vegas. That has to be the explanation for being 4 pounds lighter today than yesterday.

Though I did spend some considerable time outside yesterday washing my motorcycle. It took quite a bit of effort getting Alaska and Canada off of it.

But that just implies that I didn't really gain any fat at all from the month-long motorcycle ride. And well, I'm happy for that.

So this morning I'm starting out with a pound of fresh strawberries for breakfast. I really need to get back into the swing of writing jerky reviews. However, after being away for a month, my house needs work. The air conditioner is out. My front lawn looks like it's about dead. One of our toilets has developed a bad leak.

Dieting On a Motorcycle Ride to Alaska

Weighed in this morning at 158 pounds.

I've been away from this blog for some time because on June 14, 2010 I took off for Alaska on my motorcycle. I just got back home yesterday.

I weighed in at 155 pounds when I left, and this morning I weighed in at 158 pounds.

Not bad, only gained three pounds out of the whole trip.

I think what helped is that I had several days where I just rode all day long, putting in long 500 to 750 mile days. I would snack on something about every-other gas stop, either a bag of raw almonds, or a bag of trail mix, or a bag of beef jerky. I drank pretty much just on those days.

At the Alaska/Canada border heading into Skagway, AK

But I also had days where I splurged on some great food at some cool restaurants. I drank an awful lot of beer too, visiting several bars and breweries, and having a great time chatting with the locals.

And then of course, there's the motorcycling, which I've said seems to help you burn off calories. On those cold rainy days in Canada and Alaska, which there are lot of during the Summer months, the body tends to burn more calories trying to generate heat.

I also made better choices on what I ate. I drank plenty of coffee, but added no sugar or cream, just plain. When I bought trail mix or nuts, I made sure it contained no added sugar. And that stuff is not easy to find in gas stations.

I also did some hiking on a few days.

Well, I'm pleased that I only gained three pounds over a month long motorcycle ride. But in the rest of this month I want to get that weight back down to 150.

Vacationing in San Diego and Dieting

Weighed in this morning at 155 pounds.

My wife and I spent the last weekend on a three-day, two-night vacation in San Diego. It's only a 90 minute drive south from where we are, and we've been there many times. But it's nice to spend some quality time together.

But over that period I did a lot of eating and drinking of course. And when I weighed myself yesterday morning, I was at a despicable 158 pounds.

So consider I did well to lose 3 pounds in just one day.

I didn't do any exercise yesterday.

However, I managed to eat a little bit throughout the day to keep my metabolism running.

I also took two hot baths, one in the late afternoon, and another late evening, just before going to bed. From what I've witnessed, soaking in a hot bath seems to help burn off more calories.

And taking a hot bath just before going to bed helps me sleep better, and of course getting a good night's sleep burns quite a few calories too.

Eliminating Sodas From My Diet

Weighed in this morning at 154 pounds.

This past Memorial Day Weekend saw myself eating and drinking to my heart's content, and gaining weight up to as high as 158 pounds.

I decided I'm going to make another lifestyle change. I'm going to stop drinking sodas, including diet sodas. I don't know enough about the chemicals in these drinks, but if they can clean the rust off of nails, I'm sure they're not doing my body any good.

Instead I'm going increase my consumption of teas, specifically green tea. Everything I've read thus far is all positive about green tea boosting metabolism. I've actually been drinking green tea for about a year now, by way of powdered drink mixes. I can't say if they've done me any good, but I'm guessing it's still better than sodas.

The other thing is artificial sweeteners. I want to gradually wean myself off of that too. Right now, I'm still consuming them in the green tea powdered drink mixes. I've been buying sweetened green tea powder with fruit flavorings.

What I want is to find powdered green tea mix without any sweeteners, but I haven't been able to find them. The powdered mixes are so convenient in pouring into a bottle of water. The best I can find are straight green tea bags that you can soak in cold water.

Back Down to my Base Weight

Weighed in this morning at 150 pounds, down two from yesterday.

What a sigh of relief! I finally returned to 150 pounds after several months.

I lost two pounds yesterday by starting out with two whole wheat tortillas, plain. Then ate about 8oz of beef jerky, and drank about 5 bottles of water with green tea mix. That's about 1,040 calories in all. Didn't do any exercise, though I soaked in a hot bath for about 30 minutes.

Oh, I posted an article on Weight Loss Blogger on "How to Lose 30 Pounds in 30 Days". I have never lost that many pounds in such a short time, but seeing that my weight loss regimen has me losing 1-2 pounds a day, I know I could do it. And therefore anyone could do it. The key is three-fold, exercise, dieting, and boosting your metabolism.

We always hear experts talk about diet and exercise, but they don't always talk about raising your metabolism. I think it's because exercise itself raises metabolism, but that's not enough. You have to find ways to keep it raised all throughout the day. I think that's largely how I've been able lose weight.

Gained One Pound From a Weekend Trip

Weighed in this morning at 152 pounds.

Over the weekend I did a motorcycle ride up to Paso Robles and back, staying overnight there. But as it turned out, I didn't gain much weight from that trip. Only a meager one pound.

That Saturday morning I had weighed in at 152 pounds. If you recall, I was shooting to weight in at 150 pounds, but never made it. Anyways, riding up there I had a bacon cheeseburger with salad, but no dressing, along with two cups of coffee (black). That night I had three beers, and shared a plate of nachos, potato skins, and chicken strips. And the following day I had a tri-tip sandwich and onion rings. That was all I ate.

When I weighed in the following Monday morning, I was only 153 pounds. I figure the the two full days of motorcycle riding is what helped me burn off those calories. I know, I know, how can riding a motorcycle burn calories? I don't really know the science behind it, but it does. I wrote another article where I talk about this more, "Riding a Motorcycle Can Burn Calories".

So between yesterday and this morning, I lost another pound to make it to 152. So what did I do? Well no exercise. But I did soak in a hot bath for about 30 minutes. Otherwise, I had two whole wheat tortillas (plain) in the morning. Two tall glasses of green tea (unsweetened), 5oz of beef jerky, and a regular bagel (plain) in the evening. That works out to about 1,000 calories.

But the main thing is that I ate all day long, but ate a little at a time to keep my body metabolizing all day long.

Getting Closer to My Base Weight

Weighed in this morning at 152 pounds. Down two pounds from yesterday.

I didn't get out of the house like I had hoped to. I ended up just working on my websites.

I started out with a couple whole wheat tortillas, and a couple cans of diet soda. Later on in the day I had about 5oz of beef jerky. Then at night I had another can of diet soda. That was all I had.

But I also did some weight lifting at home.

Water Weight from Three Beers

Weighed in this morning at 154 pounds, up one pound from yesterday.

I started the day with a couple of whole wheat tortillas, plain. And then ate about 4oz of beef jerky, along with about 2 tall glasses of green iced tea. That equates to about 720 calories.

Then in the evening, I rode my motorcycle to a local tavern to meet up with some friends, and I had a small chicken pizza and three beers. I'm guessing that's about 1,400 calories there.

So all in all, I consumed about 2,120 calories for the day, which is just a little bit over the 2,000 average that a guy my size usually burns living out a sedentary day.

I figure the water weight from the three beers is what sent my weight higher this morning, since I got back home late in the evening and didn't have time to piss it all out.

I'm still shooting for a weight of 150 pounds by this Saturday morning.

I'm not sure what the plan is for today. I spent Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday working in my home office on websites. I want to get out of the house today, and I need to continue exercising.

Mission Carb Balance Tortillas

Weighed in this morning at 153 pounds. Down one from yesterday.

I started the morning with a couple of whole wheat tortillas for breakfast, plain with nothing on them. I bought the Mission Carb Balance. Those things have tons of fiber in them, 21g per tortilla. Consider that 30g of fiber a day is what a guy should eat, and I ate two of those things. Each tortilla is 200 calories.

I also ate a 4oz bag of jerky, which I put about 320 calories. Then I had a can of Low Sodium V8 Juice (70 calories), several glasses of water, and a pound of strawberries in the evening. I'm guessing I ate around 700 calories in all yesterday.

I also exercised, doing a 2 1/2 mile hike up and down the hills again.

Tonight is our monthly bike night, where several of us motorcycle riders get together for beer. Considering all the liquids I'll be drinking until late at night, I'm not expecting to lose any weight by tomorrow morning's weigh in. We'll see however. I'm not planning to eat anything there, instead doing my eating here at home.

Getting Back to Controlling Portions

Weighed in this morning at 154 pounds.

In my last post a week ago, I mentioned getting sick after eating at Claim Jumper for Mother's Day, and found myself losing weight to 152 pounds.

Since then my weight went up to as high as 158 pounds over the last weekend. I'm determined to get it back down to 150 by next Saturday morning.

The past Sunday I encountered a little bit of success by ordering smaller portions. My wife and I went out to a BBQ restaurant, and instead of ordering a full rack of pork ribs, I only ordered a half. And then I only ate about half of the side dishes.

Of course, that meant I'd get more hungry sooner, and I did. But I ended up going to a frozen yogurt shop and getting smoothie. I imagine that smoothie had the same calories as eating another half-rack of ribs.

But I made up for it by doing a 2 1/2 mile hike up and down some hills in my town. So, I'm trying to get myself to eating smaller portions at the table, and then I need to find low-calories ways to snack when I get hungry.

Oh and then last night I did some weight lifting. My arms and legs feel sore right now.

Sick After Mother's Day

Weighed in this morning at 152 pounds.

Over the Mother's Day Weekend I had gained up to about 158 pounds, but lost six pounds after getting sick from the food. I'm blaming on the Romaine lettuce I had at Claim Jumper. I know there's an e coli problem going on right now with Romaine lettuce, and I probably should have stayed away from it.

Yesterday I slept almost the entire day.

But today I feel a lot better.

Rollercoaster Weight Shifts

Weighed in this morning at 155 pounds.

Since my last post on April 29, my weight went up to 160 pounds, the result of the past weekend's eating and drinking.

I seem to be in a cycle of losing weight between Monday and Thursday, and then gaining it back Friday through Sunday. Which is actually not too bad considering I lose everything I gain. But on the other hand, I'm never really maintaining weight because it's always a process of gain and lose.

But I'm really only talking about weight swings of 5-10 pounds. I'm guessing that most people go through the same thing. I doubt anyone can maintain their ideal weight and never vary by less than 2 pounds.

As for beef jerky, I still have lots to go through. Yesterday I got another package, and over the weekend I received more too. This is all free stuff from companies that want me to write reviews.

I'm also going to try to get more reviews written for my beef stick blog. Maybe you didn't know I had one. But a few days ago I received a package of free sticks from this one company. Beef stick are not good for a diet, unlike beef jerky. But, it's sounding like it might be a good business model to try.

Watching My Weight in Las Vegas

Weighed in this morning at 156 pounds.

The last four days was spent with my wife enjoying an extended weekend, first visiting an indian casino here in Southern California, and then the next three days up in Las Vegas. We got back home last night.

I tried to mitigate the impact of all the eating, mostly by eating lots of meat, some veggies, a little bit of bread, and no sugary desserts or fruits.

But I did drink lots of beer. I went to casinos that would comp you on beer as long as you played slots. And then, I managed to find a casino that not only did this, but offered some really good microbrews.

On top of that, I bought this software that teaches how to maximize my winnings on video poker. So, I managed to learn a lot from it and was able to stretch a $20.00 bill out for a couple hours. And in that time, I would drink down a few free beers.

Considering all that, the fact that I weighed in this morning at 156 pounds is pretty good.

Lost Three Pounds Yesterday

Weighed in this morning at 152 pounds, that's down 3 pounds from yesterday.

Crazy is all I can think, losing 3 pounds in one day.

I started yesterday with a grapefruit. Then I had 5oz of beef jerky, and a can of Low Sodium V8 Juice.

Then I went into my garage and changed the rear brakes on my motorcycle. That's a low impact exercise of pulling my bike up on to its center stand, and torquing off and on the bolts. I drank down two cans of Diet Coke after that.

Later on I had a small romaine lettuce salad with green salsa for dressing. After which, I had a regular sized bagel with margarine. Then in the evening I had 1oz of almonds.

I don't know what the calorie intake is on all that, I'm guessing about 1,000.

I didn't do any other exercise aside from working on my motorcycle.

I did, however, soak in a hot bath for about 40 minutes. I wondering if there's a lot more to that than I thought. I posted a new article about hot baths on Weight Loss Blogger. Go read it and see what you think.

First of all, soaking in a hot bath in the evening is something I've done since for as long as I can remember. My mother is from Japan, and this is something the Japanese always do. The bathtubs they have at home are not shaped like we have them in the USA. They're deeper, about 3 feet deep, and designed to hold about 3-4 people. At least, that's what I remember when I lived in Yokohama in the early 1970s.

Anyways, that's one reason why I take hot baths. But the other is because I knew the hot water will raise your heart rate, and that would burn some extra calories. But I think it must burn a lot more calories than that. It must also raise your metabolism considerably.

I mean, I know I have a high metabolism to begin with, but in order for me to lose 3 pounds in one day, I had to have burned 10,500 calories, at a minimum. And no way did I do that much exercise. So, either it's just me, which I doubt. Or there's something else that a hot bath does for the body.

Lost Two Pounds Eating Chocolate

Weighed in this morning at 155 pounds, down two pounds from yesterday.

I stuck to the beef jerky diet yesterday, somewhat. I had 3oz of beef jerky, and then about another 4oz of chocolate beef jerky. This company called "Chocomize" sent me three large sized bars of chocolate, two of them containing chunks of beef jerky. They wanted me to write reviews.

I didn't eat all the bars, but I ate enough to write the review. You can read my review here:

Anyways, I also had a pound of strawberries in the early evening. Add to that a bottle of water and a bottle of beer, that was all I consumed.

I actually didn't drink much liquids, just those two bottles, plus whatever liquid was in the strawberries. I figure the night before, I had countless helpings of beer. So I was trying to get rid of water.

The plan for today is more beef jerky.

Excess Eating Over the Weekend

Weighed in this morning at 157 pounds. That's up four pounds from last Wednesday.

Over the weekend I really let up on my diet. Friday, Saturday, and Sunday I managed to get a lot of food and drink in me. It was a good time, hanging out with friends.

So this week I need to get back to my weight loss plan and head back towards my optimal weight of 150.

I have a lot of beef jerky here that I have to review. I also have these beef jerky chocolate bars that I have to review also. I'll probably do that today. That's a lot of sugar to put in me, but I don't plan on eating all the bars. But I still like the idea that companies send me this stuff.

Lost Another Pound

Weighed in this morning at 153 pounds, down one from yesterday.

I stuck to the beef jerky diet yesterday. I didn't drink any beer. I also had a package of strawberries, and I mowed the lawn for a bit of exercise.

It's funny, it seems like I'm becoming more of a beer drinker that I'm taking notice of the days I don't drink any. Not that drinking beer is bad, it seems to be the only alcoholic beverage that you can still diet with.

I'm shooting for another beef jerky diet day today, hoping to make it three in a row.

The Best Time To Weigh Yourself

Weighed in this morning at 154 pounds, down one from yesterday.

Yesterday I more or less stuck to the beef jerky diet. Here's a breakdown of what I did to lose that 1 pound...

Morning: 1 can of V8 Juice (70 calories)
Late Morning: 2.5oz of beef jerky (200 calories)
Afternoon: 1 can of V8 Juice (70 calories)
Afternoon: 3oz of beef jerky (240 calories)
Late Afternoon: romaine lettuce salad with salsa (125 calories)
Late Afternoon: 1 12oz bottle of Bud Light beer (116 calories)
Evening: 1 22oz bottle of Lagunitas Ale (250 calories)

Total: 1,071 calories

Exercise: none

I found that if do all my heavy eating earlier in the day, and leave the evening for light foods, or light eating, I tend to lose weight. Eating something heavy in the evening will almost always guarantee a weight gain for me.

I know it's often been said that when you eat really doesn't have an affect on weight gain, it's more so an affect on what the scale says early in the morning. That is, if you're going to weigh yourself, do it about 12 hours after your last meal.

But as it is, I always weigh myself after I wake up.

Well, I'm planning another beef jerky diet day today.

Gained a Pound from the Salad Bar

Weighed in at 155 pounds this morning. Up one pound from yesterday.

Yesterday, I had lunch at Claim Jumper, having a salad bar. I had a spinach, tomato, and cucumber salad, with turkey and pepperoncinis. They don't have salsa, so I put this tomato vinagrette on there, it had a lot of fat in it.

I also had a good deal of potato salad, macaroni salad, and cottage cheese. I also had three slices of garlic cheese bread. And then washed it down with two beers.

But as far as solid food goes that was all I ate that day. I did have three more beers throughout the day, however.

Otherwise, I spent most of the day riding my motorcycle. I didn't really exercise.

But I guess gaining one pound isn't too bad after eating all that. If I had stayed away from the potato salad, macaroni salad, and garlic cheese bread, I think I would have lost a half-pound, or maybe a full pound.

Lost One Pound After a Salad Bar

Weighed in this morning at 154 pounds, down another pound from yesterday.

Yesterday the wife and I went out for lunch to a Sizzler. I had the salad bar buffet. I started with a small spinach, tomato, and cucumber salad with salsa as a dressing. Then I had about 12 small chicken tacos (these are really small) with jalapenos, salsa and hot sauce. I had a diet soda to drink.

I left there feeling satisfied, but not stuffed.

But actually, early that morning I ate about 6oz of jerky. Then in the evening, I ate about 3oz of jerky, and two bottles of beer.

As for exercise, all I did was wash my motorcycle.

I also soaked in a hot bath for about 45 minutes.

I'm starting to think that soaking in a hot bath does something for the metabolism. As my body heats up, I can feel my heart beating faster. But I wonder if this cause the metabolism to run at a higher rate even well after the bath. It also helps me go to sleep, and I get a full night's sleep after taking a bath.

Eating Pizza and Losing Weight

Weighed in at 155 pounds this morning, down one pound from yesterday.

Yesterday, all I ate was a medium sized cheese pizza. I acquired this pizza from last Tuesday in Payson, AZ, while riding my motorcycle through town. I stopped there for lunch with my friends, and we ordered an extra-large pizza. Then we saw the poster advertising a free medium-sized cheese pizza if you buy an extra-large pizza.

So, I asked for the medium-sized cheese pizza.

But we never ate it, so I got a box to go.

I ended up hauling it around Arizona on Tuesday and Wednesday, until I arrived home in Southern California Wednesday night. Then I ate it the next day for lunch.

It was probably the world's longest pizza delivery.

I threw on extra cheese, some tabasco sauce and red pepper flakes. I didn't eat the crust because after nuking the pizza, the crust got really hard. I'm not sure how many calories that turned out to be.

Aside from two bottles of beer, two cans of diet soda, and a bottle of water, that was all I consumed that day.

And no exercise.

And still lost one pound.

Oh, and I soaked in a hot bath later that night. I think that contributes to some calorie burn by way of making your heart beat faster. But I'm not sure how many calories I can burn from this.

So anyways, you can still eat a pizza, drink beer, and lose weight.

Camping and Dieting

Weighed in this morning at 156 pounds.

The past five days I've been camping with some friends. We rode our motorcycles from Southern California to various campsites in Arizona.

I left Saturday morning at 155 pounds and gained only 1 pound over that whole camping trip.

And I didn't necessarily diet during the whole time. I drank a lot of beer, but only ate a moderate amount of food. In fact, none of us really gorged. There was only one evening when I ate a lot of food, and that was at a mexican restaurant in Sedona, AZ.

But I tried to make sure I ate something early in the morning, to get my metabolism started. Also, the whole trip was cold. Even though I had on a weather-resistant riding jacket, and a pair of thermal underwear, I was still cool, not warm. But my hands, were achingly cold.

Anyways, I think the cold temperatures throughout the day and night is what kept my metabolism burning fat.

Lost One Pound in One Day

Weighed in this morning at 155 pounds. Down one pound from yesterday.

Yesterday I went off the beef jerky diet. I had lunch at a Sizzler's, and ate several chicken tacos with jalapenos and hot sauce (I love hot food). I threw in some potato wedges. But I stayed away from anything with sugar.

That's pretty much all I ate yesterday. I was rather full from eating all that, and yet I managed to still lose one pound.

I didn't do any exercise yesterday, though I spent the afternoon working on my motorcycle, putting a new tire on.

Meat in the Morning, Fiber at Night

Weighed in this morning at 156 pounds.

In my last blog post from Friday, I mentioned wanting to weigh in at 155 pounds on Saturday morning. I accomplished that.

I also said that on that Saturday I'd be taking a motorcycle ride with my wife for the weekend, and I accomplished that too. So when I weighed in on Monday morning, I was back up to 159 pounds.

Between Monday and Tuesday, I managed to lose weight by sticking to the beef jerky diet on Monday, and Tuesday I actually lunched at a buffet, but I stuck to eating only meats, and consumed no sugar.

I think moving forward, I'm going to try eating meats the first thing I do after waking up. I'm hoping that will not only get my metabolism jump started, but keep it running consistently all day long, assuming I eat more beef jerky later that day.

I'm also going to take fiber supplements in the evening. I'm guessing that should keep my digestion working as I sleep, but without adding calories.

Mexican Food and Beer

Weighed in this morning at 156 pounds. No change from yesterday.

Yesterday I went out on a motorcycle ride with some friends to San Diego, and had lunch at a mexican restaurant. I had a beer, chips & salsa, and a plate of carnitas. I pretty much finished everything and was rather full.

Later on, I stopped at a bar and had a few more beers.

At the bar, I was very tempted to eat some more. By that time I had the space in my belly to do so. But I kept telling myself that it wasn't necessary. I had a big lunch, and my body didn't need more for that day.

And I managed to resist.

It's little successes like that that convince me I'm on the right track. And when I know I'm on the right track, I feel all the more encouraged to go full steam ahead.

Today, I'm hoping to trim off another pound, and weigh in tomorrow morning at 155. Tomorrow the wife and I are heading out for a weekend trip, and I'm sure there'll be a lot of eating and drinking.

Still Keeping My Weight in Check

Weighed in this morning at 156 pounds.

Since my last blog post, which was over a month ago, I've been holding my weight between 150 and 160. Overall, that's good.

A week ago, my wife and I spend a week in Hawaii, celebrating our 20th wedding anniversary. I suspected I would gain weight, and I did. But then again, I didn't want to spend the whole week worrying about my weight, and ruining the whole time for my wife.

But I still managed to mitigate the impact by electing to eat more salads. And instead of sweet drinks, I stuck with beer.

Also, our hotel on Waikiki Beach is so close to everything, that it didn't necessitate driving a car. We could walk everywhere, and that obviously helped a lot.

In fact, I wrote a blog post for my other diet blog, "How to Lose Weight on Vacation".

Well, after returning home from Hawaii, my weight was at 160 pounds. And I've lost four pounds since then.

I'm still eating a lot of beef jerky, but still eating a fair amount of fruits and vegetables too. So far, my diet regimen is largely the same as it has been for the past couple of years. And I'm happy with that. I could easily pig out just as before, but I seem to have gained more tolerance over that time.

Eat a High Protein Meal in the Morning

Weighed in this morning at 154 pounds.

Yesterday I weighed in at 157 pounds, the result of a lot of eating and drinking on Saturday.

I've noticed that if I eat just one big meal in the morning or afternoon, packed with lots of protein, and don't eat anything else the whole day, I'll lose weight. Basically, if I can go to bed on an empty stomach, I'll wake up 2-3 pounds lighter.

The idea is that if you can pack in a lot of protein early in the day, your metabolism will run all day long trying to process it. It takes longer for the body to metabolize protein than it does carbohydrates. Hence, it's often why you feel fuller longer if you eat a lot of meat, as opposed to a lot of fruit/vegetables.

So yesterday, after weighing in at 157 pounds, I had Sunday brunch, consisting of an omelette, several strips of bacon, breakfast potatoes, three small chicken tacos, scrambled eggs, and a few potato wedges. I left feeling pretty full. I ate nothing the rest of the day.

My stomach felt empty by the time I went to bed, which was 12:30am.

The next day I woke up 8:30am. The first thing I did was eat a grapefruit. I checked my e-mail, and then did my "morning dump". I weighed myself, and it read 153.5 pounds. I rounded it up to 154 pounds, and began writing this blog post.

I figure the brunch I ate had to have been around 3,000 calories. But it was all protein, although certainly not lean protein. To lose 3 pounds in one day, I had to have burned off all 3,000 calories I ate, plus an addition 10,500 calories (3,500 calories = 1 pound). That's 13,500 calories I burned, and yet did no exercise.

All the calories I burned were lazy calories, mostly metabolizing all the protein I ate, then sitting in a chair, driving a car, walking around the house, and soaking in a tub.

And oh yeah, soaking in a hot bath can help too. If you can get the water hot enough, your heart will beat faster. That will cause more calories burned.

Considering a Gym Membership

Weighed in this morning at 153 pounds.

The past week since my last blog post here, I've gone up and down, as high as 157 pounds after a day of eating and drinking. But I've managed to compensate by dieting.

Lately, I've contemplated getting a gym membership. I want a gym that's close to my home, and there are only two really close, and both are independent gyms, not associated with any national brands like 24 Hour Fitness or LA Fitness.

One gym has the full facilities, weights, track, pool, spa, racquetball, classes, etc. The other is just a small gym located at a strip mall, they only have weights. The smaller place is way cheaper too.

So I'm figuring on using the smaller place, just because all I want are the weights, and I hate paying for stuff I never use.

I'm also pleased to report that it's been about three months now that I reached my target weight of 150 pounds, and here I am this morning at 153 pounds. So, I've managed to hold steady at this weight range. I still would love to eat and eat and eat, but either the urges are not as strong, or maybe my will is stronger.

Well, if you're trying to reach your target weight, what I can say is that it actually gets easier the more you do it. So keep at it.

Tryin to Gain Some Weight Back

Weighed in this morning at 151 pounds.

Ok, so back to Thursday again. I had written that I had hit my lowest weight since dieting, at 147 pounds. That day I decided I ought to put some weight back on. So my wife and I went out to a restaurant, except I found myself getting a salad. Thought I did have one beer.

But in the evening, I went out to the tavern and four more beers, and a small pizza. Turns out, that was all I ate the whole day. I got back home from the tavern around 12:30am, and never took a pee.

So even when I'm thinking I need to put on more weight, I'm still not really packing on a lot of calories.

I did gain six pounds from that day, but again, it was mostly water weight from all the beer.

And then the following day (yesterday), I managed to eat a little more. But I laid off the water, except for a can of low sodium V8 Juice. Otherwise, I had a few slices of leftover pizza (from Superbowl Sunday), and I found an entire take-out order of fish-n-chips that my wife never ate. I also had a grapefruit and a pound of strawberries.

And yet, I still trimmed off two pounds, down to 151 this morning.

But again, that's because I didn't drink much, and peed out all the beer I drank the day before.

Down to My Lowest Weight Ever

Weighed in this morning at 147 pounds. Down one pound from yesterday.

Here's what I did yesterday to lose one pound...

Morning: 1 medium sized grapefruit (100 calories)
Afternoon: 8oz of beef jerky (640 calories)
Afternoon: 3 bottles of water (0 calories)
Late afternoon : 1 bottle of dark beer (200 calories)
Evening: 2 cans of low sodium V8 Juice (140 calories)

Total: 1,080 calories

Exercise: none

So I'm down to my lowest weight ever, at least since I've been on my diet. I haven't been this low since college. When I entered college I was still at a lower weight of 130.

At three pounds below my target weight, I'm planning to eat out today. Try to pack in some more calories. I also have some grocery shopping to do.

Keeping My Kitchen Stocked With Healthy Foods

Weighed in at 148 pounds this morning, down one pound from yesterday.

Here's what I had yesterday...

Morning: 1oz (24 count) almonds (160 calories)
Afternoon: 6oz of beef jerky (480 calories)
Afternoon: 1 can of low sodium V8 juice (70 calories)
Afternoon: 2 1/2 bottles of water (0 calories)
Early Evening: 5oz romaine spinach arugula salad with salsa (70 calories)
Evening: 1 large whole wheat tortilla (200 calories)
Evening: 1 can of low sodium V8 Juice (70 calories)

Total: 1,050 calories

Exercise: none

Well my office is filling back up with jerky. I've had several brands send me their samples. I also purchased some jerky too on that overnighter to Las Vegas last week. So, I need to get to eating.

Since I'm now underweight (or at least by my standards) I really ought to pack on some calories. My refrigerator still has plenty of frozen foods, and my pantry still has canned chili. But, I don't want to get in the habit of eating that stuff.

We also still have lots of cookies that my wife made last Christmas. They're probably hard now, but likewise I don't want to get in the habit of eating them.

So, it really does behoove me to keep my kitchen stocked with healthier foods.

My Metabolism Must Be Running High

Weighed in this morning at 149 pounds, down three from yesterday.

Here's what I did yesterday to lose those three pounds...

Afternoon: 6.5oz of beef jerky (520 calories)
Afternoon: 2 bottles of water (0 calories)
Afternoon: 1 can of low sodium V8 juice (70 calories)
Late Afternoon: 1 12oz bottle of dark beer (200 calories)
Evening: 2 medium sized multi-grain tortillas (200 calories)
Evening: 1 can of low sodium V8 juice (70 calories)

Total: 1,060 calories

Exercise: none

My metabolism must be running at a high rate, even though I'm fairly slim right now. In order to lose three pounds, I had to have burned a minimum of 10,500 calories, plus that additional 1,060 calories I consumed.

Normally, as you slim down your metabolsim can run at a lower rate since you have less body mass to maintain. I figure the average person at 150 pounds burns about 2,000 calories a day if they do no exercise.

One thing I can figure is that we leave the heater off when we sleep. The temperature in our bedroom will fall down to about 64 degrees F. My wife wants it cool when she sleeps because she can't handle warm. I prefer it warm, but then I can just pile on more blankets.

So, I'm wondering if my body is actually getting cold at night, and my metabolism has to keep burning fuel to maintain a proper 98.6 degrees F?

Losing Weight Over the Superbowl

Weighed in this morning at 152 pounds, down two from yesterday.

Yesterday my wife and I went out for lunch, I had a chicken salad with balsamic dressing, and some garlic cheese bread, as well as a 22oz bottle of beer. It was a big salad, I couldn't finish it all. I stayed full most of the day, but finally had a can of Low Sodium V8 Juice in the evening. Otherwise, that was it.

As for watching the superbowl, I didn't. I did get some updates via the web. I would have watched it on television, but I wasn't interested in watching it by myself. And my wife doesn't like watching football. I wasn't sure if any of my friends were watching the game, so we just went out for lunch and then stayed home.

chicken salad with cheese bread
I guess that helped me stave off a potential weight gain. I'm noticing on Twitter and Facebook that several people reporting themselves heavier. Most likely it's just water gain.

The more beer you consume, the less space you have for food. And if you think about it, the amount of space beer can take up in your stomach is far greater than the amount of calories it gives you. That is, you can get more calories from 16oz of chips than 16oz of beer.

So if you drank a lot of beer, or any kind of beverage, in large quantities during a Superbowl party, that's actually not that bad. It's better than snacking away on chips, chicken wings, seven-layer-dip, etc. It prevented you from eating a lot worse.

Dieting in Las Vegas

Weighed in this morning at 154 pounds.

Since my last diet log Tuesday, that's effectively a five pound gain.

Wednesday my wife and I went up to Las Vegas for an overnighter. We came back Thursday night. I actually didn't over eat, I managed to eat in moderation, but I drank as much beer as I could. So by the time I weighed myself Friday morning, I think I still had quite a bit of water in me.

But Friday night, I continued to drink more beer, hanging out with friends at the tavern until midnight. But I also ate in moderation that day as well.

And yesterday, I had a grapefruit in the morning, about 8oz of beef jerky in the afternoon, a bottle of water, and then some non-fat, no sugar added, frozen yogurt. That was really about it. I'm guessing that was about 1,200 calories in all.

I'm not sure what's in store for us today. Of course its Superbowl Sunday today. I'm not really into this game since my Chargers got knocked out. We'll see how she feels.

Getting Tweeted for Hemorroids

Weighed in this morning at 149 pounds, down one pound from yesterday.

Here's what I did yesterday to lose that one pound...

Morning: 1 medium sized grapefruit (100 calories)
Afternoon: 3.5oz of beef jerky (210 calories)
Afternoon: 1 bottle of water (0 calories)
Afternoon: 1 can of low sodium V8 Juice (70 calories)
Late afternoon: 1 Butter lettuce salad with salsa verde (75 calories)
Late afternoon: 1 Bud Light Lime (112 calories)
Evening: 1 dry pint of grape tomatoes (70 calories)
Evening: 2 medium sized whole wheat tortillas (200 calories)

Total: 837 calories

Exercise: none

Getting Tweeted for Hemorroids

No, I don't have hemorroids, but I noticed yesterday that this blog was tweeted by someone who writes about hemorroids...

hemorroid tweet

The tweet was through an "auto-tweeter", picking up keywords, probably through Google Blog Search. But nonetheless, as little attention as my blog gets, I'm happy for it.

The tweet is pointing to yesterday's blog post entitled "I Found a Good Remedy for Constipation".

Anyways, I thought it was interesting that the person who tweeted it focuses on writing about hemorroids. I suppose with the way the Internet is, each and every little thing on this planet needs someone to champion it. Can you imagine when someone asks what you do for a living, and you say "I'm a hemorroid blogger"?

Actually, it looks like the writer is an affiliate marketer (like me), who uses a blog to market hemorroid products.

Oh well, and people tell me that it's freaky I write in-depth reviews on beef jerky.

I Found a Good Remedy For Constipation

Weighed in this morning at 150 pounds, down three pounds from yesterday.

Yesterday I had the following to eat...

Morning: 1 medium sized grapefruit (100 calories)
Afternoon: 5.5oz of beef jerky (440 calories)
Afternoon: 1 bottle of water (0 calories)
Afternoon: 1 can of low sodium V8 Juice (70 calories)
Early evening: 1 pint of frozen yogurt, non-fat, with fruit (500 calories)
Late evening: 2 corn bread muffins (600 calories)

Total: 1,710 calories

Exercise: none

Ok, so what caused me to lose three pounds after consuming that many calories, and no exercise?

Well, after having 5.5oz of beef jerky, and then having a pint of frozen yogurt, things didn't mix well, and I ended up with the runs just a couple hours later.

Later on in evening, I was getting the shakes. So I had those two corn bread muffins. I felt a lot better after eating them.

If you're a regular reader of this blog, you might recall last November, when I finally reached my goal of 150 pounds, it was actually due to the same combination of beef jerky and frozen yogurt, producing the runs (link).

So at least I now know a good remedy for constipation.

I Used to Be Hot, Now I'm Cold

Weighed in this morning at 153 pounds.

Over the past five days my weight went up to as high as 156 pounds, after a full day of eating and beer drinking. But I was able to control my portions in the subsequent days, and managed start off this week just a few pounds over my target weight.

Even though I didn't blog anything over those past five days, you can still see my weight loss chart at the far-right; I've been logging my weigh ins.

The joke now is that I'm always cold, and my wife is always hot. It used to be the other way around. I want to say that it's because I don't have the layers of fat to keep my blood warm. But the fact is that when I was this slim in my early 20s, I didn't feel cold back then.

And the same is true of my wife. She used to always be cold when she was in her 20s, and was actually heavier than she is now.

But when I was in my 20s, I was always thin. I could eat and eat and eat and never gain weight. Today, I don't have a problem gaining weight. So I figured my metabolism was running at a higher pace in those days than it is now.

In the car, we fight over the thermostat, she has to have it turned to 68 degrees F, I have to have it at 74. The same is true inside the house.

I'm guessing even at my heaviest weight of 240 pounds, I was still cold. It's just the layer of fat made it difficult to notice.

Husband & Wife Weight Loss Competition

Weighed in this morning at 150 pounds, no change from yesterday.

Here's what I did yesterday...

Morning: 1 can of low sodium V8 Juice (70 calories)
Morning: 1 small multi-grain tortilla (100 calories)
Afternoon: 5oz of beef jerky (400 calories)
Afternoon: 1 bottle of water (0 calories)
Afternoon: 1 can of low sodium V8 Juice (70 calories)
Evening: 1 package, 170g, of blackberries (83 calories)
Evening: 1 dry pint of grape tomatoes (70 calories)
Evening: 1 medium sized grapefruit (70 calories)

Total: 863 calories

Exercise: none

The past couple of months my wife and I have been having a little weight loss competition. She's been shedding some pounds too. But not on a "beef jerky diet". She's not really on any specific weight loss plan, other than not stuffing herself. She just eats enough to satisfy her hunger, and then stops.

Otherwise, she still gets the burger, but usually only eats half. She'll make corn bread muffins, but only eats one. She'll get a 6 inch sub sandwich, and still only eat half. And to drink, all she ever drinks is iced tea, no sugar.

She seems to be dropping about 1-2 pounds per week, which is perfect.

In the past, she would eat a lot more. But she says doesn't really feel that hungry. But I noticed she also keeps her mind occupied on other things, so she's never really that bored.

Beef Jerky Industry Picking Up

Weighed in this morning at 150 pounds, down one from yesterday.

Here's what I did yesterday to lose that one pound...

Morning: 1 cup of kefir (110 calories)
Morning: 1 multi-grain tortilla (100 calories)
Afternoon: 7oz of beef jerky (560 calories)
Afternoon: 1 bottle of water (0 calories)
Afternoon: 1 can of low sodium V8 Juice (70 calories)
Evening: 1 pound of strawberries (150 calories)
Evening: 1 can of low sodium V8 Juice (70 calories)

Total: 1,060 calories

Exercise: none

Beef Jerky Industry Picking Up

I don't have any hard facts on this, but it seems like the beef jerky industry is picking up right now. I'm seeing a lot of new gourmet brands hitting the market, as well as national brands. And I follow several brands through Twitter and Facebook, and I'm hearing them say that business is soaring right now.

That should be good for my beef jerky review blog, and perhaps this beef jerky diet blog too.

And I'm getting back into the swing of writing reviews now. Last Fall, I had tailed off writing them daily, and spent a few months writing only a handful. Right now, I have several brands of jerky to review, and I'm feeling eager to write reviews again.

Of course, it would be cool if these brands sent me free samples to review. Maybe I'll receive more samples if the industry is indeed picking up. Some brands are pretty confident they're jerky is the best, and they have no issues sending me jerky to review. Other brands already know they're product is weak, and I have never heard from them.

If a brand sends me jerky to review, I know they've sent me the most freshest samples. If I buy it from them, they don't know it's me, and they usually send me what's currently laying around. So to you brands out there, better get to sending your samples in!

Motorcycle Riding Helped Me Lose Weight

Weighed in this morning at 151 pounds, down one from yesterday.

I'm not sure how I managed to lose one pound yesterday. I spent the day with some friends, riding motorcycles to San Diego, and hitting up a few pubs and taverns along the way.

I had fish 'n chips, and I ate everything on the plate. However, I avoided the tartar sauce and ketchup, and used only malt vinegar. That cut off some fat and sugar.

But I had four beers throughout the day too.

I think it was motorcycle riding.

Yeah, as I've reasoned before, riding a motorcycle will burn off calories. In this case, it was cold throughout the day. Even though I wore a jacket and sweatshirt, my body was burning calories trying to keep my temperature at 98.6 degrees F.

Also, I rode my Yamaha, which does not have a windshield, and we did a lot of freeway riding too. That meant I had to use a fair amount of arm strength to hold on to the handlebars, as well as a fair amount of leg strength to squeeze the gas tank.

And then, I got back home around 9:00pm, and still spent a few hours on my laptop, which gave me some time to pee out the beer.

That, and I really didn't eat much else the rest of the day. So really, I didn't go overboard on the calories.

I Ate 34oz of Meat Yesterday

Weighed in this morning at 152 pounds, no change from yesterday.

My wife and I spent yesterday at a local indian casino. We had the buffet, of which I ate down three 6oz New York Strip Steaks, 10oz cut of prime rib, and 6oz leg of lamb. That's about 34oz of meat! I also had a lot of chinese cabbage, some of it steamed, and some of it pickled as kim chee. I washed that down with a few glasses of iced tea.

Afterwards, I sat at a bar and played video poker for an hour with a glass of beer.

And that was all I ate or drank the entire day.

Plus I did no exercise.

So imagine eating and drinking all that, and not gaining weight?

What helped is that we got home around 6:00pm, which gave me plenty of time to pee out much of that iced tea and beer. Also, I avoided eating anything sweet. I stayed away from foods I knew had added sugar.

Today I'm supposed to go motorcycle riding with some friends to Shakespeare's Pub in San Diego. That place is known for its fish n' chips, of which I can vouch as being awesome.

Sugar Free Beef Jerky List

For all you dieters out there wanting to find a sugar free beef jerky, I put together a list of jerky brands containing no added sugar...

Beef Jerky

Turkey Jerky

Salmon Jerky

I'm constantly updating lists and reviews of sugar free beef jerky here....

When I say "no added sugar", I looked for any ingredient that contained sugar...

sugar, brown sugar, honey, molasses, teriyaki, worcestershire sauce, barbecue sauce, lime juice, lemon juice, orange juice, pineapple juice, cane juice, corn syrup, and dextrose

The beef jerky products in the above link should be sugar free, but take responsibility for yourself to review the ingredients and contact the manufacturer to make certain for yourself that these are as sugar free as you require.

Water Gain as Weight Gain

Weighed in this morning at 152 pounds, up two pounds from yesterday.

That breaks my string of four-straight days at 150 pounds.

Yesterday, I stuck to the diet up until the evening. Then my wife and I hit the local tavern, and a couple of friends met us there. I had three beers, and a large grilled chicken salad. I got home pretty late, around midnight, and hit the sack right away. So I never really had enough time to pee out all the water.

I think that's where much of that two pound gain comes from, the water from the beer.

I don't know what's in store for today, but I imagine I'll be off the diet. Though that's an oxymoron actually, I'm always watching what I eat.

Well I try to anyways!

Tumaro's Tortillas for Dieting

tumaro's tortillasWeighed in this morning at 150 pounds, that's four straight days of staying on my target weight!

My wife and I yesterday had lunch at a sushi restaurant. I loaded up on sushi and sashimi, and drank only unsweetened iced tea. Later in the day, I had a bottle of beer. Otherwise, that's all I ate. Well, except for the serving of kefir and a whole wheat tortilla in the morning.

Tumaro's Tortillas

Earlier in the week I bought a package of Tumaro's tortillas from Henry's Market. These are multi-grain tortillas, and part of Tumaro's "Low in Carbs" line. I bought the Green Onion flavor.

Previously, I had been buying whole wheat tortillas from Mission brand.

In comparison, the Tumaro's multi-grain tortillas taste strange. Mission has a nice flavor and soft texture with its whole wheat "Carb Balance" line. Tumaro's texture is not as soft.

However, in comparing the nutritional data, both Tumaro's and Mission appear to be about the same, with the exception that Tumaro's has 7g of protein, while Mission has only 3g. Also note, that Tumaro's tortillas are 39g in size, while Mission is just 28g. So, it's not a totally fair comparison. But nonetheless, most of the other nutritional data between the two, are to be the same despite that size disparity.

I think I'm going to stick with Tumaro's for now, even though they don't taste as good as Mission. Perhaps I'll try a different flavor.

Beef Jerky Makes Your Belly Flat

Weighed in this morning at 150 pounds, no change from yesterday.

Cool, that marks the third straight day I weighed in at my target weight. And yesterday was not a diet day, technically. I actually stayed on my diet regimen throughout the morning and afternoon, but went to the local tavern to hang out with friends in the evening. I had two glasses of beer and a chicken waldorf salad.

Now you might say that that's hardly breaking a diet, and perhaps you'd be right. But technically, I allowed myself to partake in the revelry, and I did, yet somehow managed to eat better and drink fewer beers.

Beef Jerky Makes Your Belly Flat

As for beef jerky making your belly flat, that's not me saying that. David Zinczenko, the editor of Men's Health Magazine, Women's Health Magazine, and the book series, "Eat This, Not That", tweeted out the following yesterday...

beef jerky makes your belly flat

And when he tweeted it, several of his readers retweeted it, and it grew some legs over the Twitterverse. The URL in the tweet takes you to an article entitled, "Best Foods for Every Part of Your Body".

Interestingly, the article does not even mention beef jerky, but does mention beef. I thought it was a cool tweet, because David has earned a lot of credibility as a weight-loss and diet guru, and with that one tweet he validated my entire blog!

Well, I don't see any signs of fat people running out to the grocery store to buy up gobs of beef jerky. But maybe I should give it more time!

Maintaining My Base Weight For Now

Weighed in this morning at 150 pounds, no change from yesterday.

I made yesterday a non-diet day. My wife and I went to Sizzler for lunch. I had the usual, which is the salad bar. I started with a salad consisting of spinach, tomatoes, cumcumbers, with salsa for topping.

Then I had a bunch of chicken soft tacos. Sizzler has shredded chicken, corn tortillas, and pickled jalapenos at their salad bar. And the location we go to in Lake Elsinore has Pico Pica sauce, which is more hot than other national branded hot sauces. So, I filled up on this.

Afterwards, we hit up a Henry's Market and I bought some more diet food. Among them was more kefir. I had stopped drinking kefir for breakfast because the kefir I found at other grocery stores in my neighborhood was all flavored, and contained sugar. So I found this unsweetened plain variety at Henry's. I tried it this morning, and the flavor was "ok". I like the probiotics in the kefir enough that I'll continue drinking this, and this unsweetened plain variety is lower in calories.

Well, I'm pleased I didn't gain any weight at least, despite eating a lot at Sizzler. But then, I didn't really eat anymore after that. I only had one beer, and a grapefruit the rest of the day. And no exercise, other than grocery shopping.

Today is effectively another non-diet day. I've planned to hit up the local tavern this evening. But that doesn't mean I'll be gorging during the day, I'm planning to stick to a low calorie day, but have a regular meal with beer in the evening.

How in the Heck Did I Gain Two Pounds?

Weighed in this morning at 150 pounds, up two pounds from yesterday.

So here's what I did yesterday...

Morning: 1 small veggie tray of carrots, peas, broccoli, w/o dip, (120 calories)
Morning: 1 can of low sodium V8 Juice (70 calories)
Afternoon: 2oz of beef jerky (160 calories)
Afternoon: 1 bottle of water (0 calories)
Mid-afternoon: 24 almonds, 1oz (160 calories)
Mid-afternoon: 1 can of low sodium V8 Juice (70 calories)
Late afternoon: 1 can, 6oz, tuna (180 calories)
Evening: 1 can of low sodium V8 Juice (70 calories)
Evening: 1 medium sized red grapefruit (70 calories)

Total: 900 calories

Exercise: I did 19 push-ups, and various weightlifting for the legs, arms, chest.

So tell me, how did I gain two pounds?

Well, when you consider I lost two pounds over Sunday after eating out at the buffet, plus two beers, and NOT exercising, I don't know.

The best I can figure is that on Sunday I lost water. Even though I had an iced tea and two beers, I still lost water weight. Whereas yesterday, I had 3 cans of V8 juice, and a bottle of water. Technically, what I drank yesterday wasn't that much compared to Sunday. And I peed several times yesterday. But that's the best I can figure.

The odd thing is that yesterday I told my wife I was two pounds below my goal of 150. So, I offered to take her out for lunch, figuring I needed to gain those two pounds back. But she didn't want to go out, instead she said she'd entertain the idea for today. But as it turns out, I somehow gained two pounds anyways, by staying home.

I Ate at the Buffet and Lost Weight!

Weighed in this morning at 148 pounds, down two pounds from yesterday.

Well, this is probably the first time in a long time that I can remember that I lost weight over a weekend.

I started out yesterday morning by eating some carrot sticks for breakfast. Then a few hours later, my wife and I went to an indian casino for brunch. I had two large slices of prime rib, with 8 whole roasted jalapenos, and guacamole (I love to eat steak with jalapenos and guacamole!). I also had room for some chinese food, sauteed eggplant and chinese cabbage. With it I had one glass of iced tea.

Afterwards, I sat at the bar and drank two beers while watching the football game, and playing video poker.

I didn't eat or drink anything else that day. And I didn't exercise.

Even though I left the casino stuffed with food and drink, I suppose I still limited my calorie intake in that I didn't eat or drink anything else the rest of the day. I could have done so, but honestly I didn't feel hungry.

Here's what I think lead to my two-pound loss...
  1. I ate something immediately after getting out of bed (a handful of carrot sticks), to get my metabolism started.

  2. I ate again (the brunch) before completely digesting the carrot sticks. That kept my metabolism running the whole time.

  3. For brunch, I trimmed all the fat from the prime rib, and made it lean as possible.

  4. Each piece of prime rib was met with a slice of roasted jalapeno. The capsaicin in the chile pepper tends to raise your body temperature, which requires your body to burn calories.

  5. I avoided sweets, and stayed away from foods that contained added-sugar.

  6. The two thick slices of prime rib took a long time to digest that I didn't feel starved the rest of the day, and so I didn't eat in the evening.

The "X Factor" in this is the lack of cash. I went to the casino with only $30.00 in cash. I spent $20.00 on a poker machine, and $10.00 on the two beers. That prevented me from buying more beer.

I'm Not Sure How I Lost Two Pounds Yesterday

Weighed in this morning at 150 pounds, down two pounds from yesterday.

Yesterday was a non-diet day, yet I still managed to lose two pounds. I guess that's good, that I can be off my diet, and lose weight. However, the reality is that I was still watching what I ate.

I started yesterday morning with about 3oz of carrot sticks. Then I hooked up with some friends to go motorcycle riding. A few hours later, we ended up at a BBQ joint, but I stuck with a cobb salad with pulled pork, and a beer. A couple more hours later, we ended the day at the tavern, where I had about 1 1/2 glasses of beer.

After my friends left, I started feeling hungry again. My wife showed up at the tavern by this time. I asked her if she was in the mood for something to eat, and she said "no". I guess that helped me, because I was caught between wanting to eat a full dinner, and trying to stick with my weight loss plan.

So, the weight loss plan won out, and I went home with her.

When I got home, I ate a grapefruit. And that was it for the day.

I had actually got home around 6:00pm. So I had enough time left in the evening to pee out what beers I had before going to bed. I think that's the biggest reason why I didn't gain any weight this morning, plus the fact that I was able to eat sensibly, and hold myself back (with a little help from my wife).

So how in the heck did I really two pounds, without any exercise, and still eat sensibly? I had to have burned 7,000 calories just to burn off two pounds of fat. But I also had to burn off what foods I ate that day. So I'm guessing I burned 8,000 to 8,500 calories that day. All I can say is "motorcycling".

It was cold that day, so my body was trying to generate heat to maintain proper temperature. I rode my Yamaha, which does not have a windshield, so I was constantly using arm and leg muscles to brace myself. Being exposed to the wind can also suck moisture out your body. And finally, when you're riding a motorcycle, you can't eat anything, so that took away opportunities for me to snack. Read more about this in an earlier article I wrote, "Riding Motorcycles and Weight Loss".

As for today, my wife and I are set to go out to one of the indian casinos, have brunch together, and watch the Chargers game.

Still Too Much Sugar in my Diet

Weighed in this morning at 152 pounds, down one from yesterday.

Here's what I did yesterday to lose that one pound...

Morning: 1 small whole wheat tortilla (80 calories)
Morning: 1 package, 170g, of blackberries (73 calories)
Afternoon: 4oz of teriyaki beef jerky (400 calories)
Mid-afternoon: 16oz fruit bowl, apple, grapes, melon, pineapple (240 calories)
Mid-afternoon: 1 can of V8 Juice (70 calories)
Evening: 1 package, 1 dry pint, cherry tomatoes (70 calories)
Evening: 1 can of V8 Juice (70 calories)

Total: 1,003 calories

Exercise: none

I think I'm starting to see the effects of sugar on weight loss. It's not just that sugar makes you fat, but it stops your metabolism from burning fat.

So yesterday, I had blackberries, teriyaki beef jerky, a fruit bowl, and two cans of V8 Juice. I still lost one pound yesterday, but it could have also been some water loss from all the beer I drank on Thursday.

The teriyaki beef jerky was a big contributor. The teriyaki sauce has a lot of sugar, and it contributed to 24gm of sugar in the whole bag. The two cans of V8 Juice has 22gm of sugar combined. I don't know exactly what the blackberries and fruit bowl contained, but probably somewhere around 30gm.

But fresh fruit and V8 Juice have so much more to offer in the form of vitamins and minerals, that I don't plan to stay away from those foods. I try not to eat anymore sweetened beef jerky, but the problem is that I've made writing beef jerky reviews a part of my business.

So, somehow I have to be more vigilant in the sugar I consume, and try to spread the fresh fruit and vegetables around more.

If you missed it, I published a new article on Weight Loss Blogger called, "Carbs Are OK, Just Not Sugar", check it out.

Making Little Changes to Your Lifestyle

Weighed in this morning at 153 pounds, up three pounds from yesterday.

Yesterday was my "off diet day". I hooked up with some friends and rode motorcycles. After dieting all Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, I satisfied my BBQ-tooth with some spare ribs and tri-tip, along with some beans, cole slaw, and bread. I had a couple of beers to wash that down.

Then later on in the day, I stopped at my favorite watering hole, and spent the rest of the evening with several more beers. So, I'm figuring I have a lot of water pee out today. If my wife is feeling good today, I'll take her out for lunch somewhere.

Making Little Changes to Your Lifestyle

Blackberries have become my favorite snack foods lately. I've always liked fruits that end in the word "berry", but it seems now whenever I get the munchies, I reach for a package of blackberries.

It's not that this craving magically appeared, it's because I trained myself this way. I had done some research into the USDA Nutrient Database, and looked up every fruit that I would expect to find at a grocery store, and checked out which ones were lowest in calories. I found lemons, cantaloupe, papaya, blackberries, strawberries, and grapefruit.

Lemons were actually the lowest, but I don't want to eat pure lemons as a snack. And while I like cantaloupe, it's a pain in the butt to slice, and they hog up a lot of room in the fridge. Even papayas are sizeable too.

So I started buying up packages of strawberries and blackberries. Now, I keep several packages of these in the fridge. Anytime I start feeling hungry, I grab a package of these, instead of chips, ice cream, cookies, or something else fattening.

To sum up, what I've done is set myself up to win, at least with regards to snacking.

The fact that I now crave something healthy, low calorie, and zero-fat, is a change to my lifestyle that will help me manage my weight. And that's what you need to do so that dieting doesn't become a struggle.

And I haven't perfected this either. I still want to train myself to eat healthy when I spend time with friends. Yesterday, I should have ordered a salad. But that desire for BBQ was really tough. That's another area of my life I'm still training myself to change.

Changing My Weight Loss Regimen

Weighed in this morning at 150 pounds, no change from yesterday.

And here's what I did yesterday to maintain weight...

Morning: 1 small whole wheat tortilla (80 calories)
Morning: 1 package, 170g, of blackberries (73 calories)
Afternoon: 3.65oz of beef jerky (300 calories)
Afternoon: 1 can of diet soda (0 calories)
Afternoon: 1 can of V8 Juice (70 calories)
Middle-Afternoon: 7oz of leftover Christmas ham (320 calories)
Middle-Afternoon: 1 can of V8 Juice (70 calories)
Early Evening: 1 can of diet soda (0 calories)
Evening: 1 package, 170g, of blackberries (73 calories)
Late Evening: 1 can of V8 Juice (70 calories)

Total: 1,056 calories

Exercise: I did some weightlifting for the arms, chest, and shoulders, and I did 20 push-ups.

So I drank two cans of diet soda, and three cans of V8. I'm guessing I still have some of that water left in me.

Changing My Weight Loss Regimen

So for the past several months I've been dieting like heck on my diet days, and eating like a pig on my non-diet days. As a result, I've been having roller-coaster swings where I gain about 5-10 pounds over the weekend, and then lose 5-10 pounds over the next few days.

That's still unhealthy the way I see it. So, I want to come up with daily regimen where I can eat a little bit more food on the diet days, and not gorge so much on my non-diet days.

If you've followed this blog regularly, you'll notice that I've been consuming about 600-800 calories a day on my diet days. I want to adjust that to 1,000 calories a day. I want to make up the additional calories by eating more protein, and getting in an extra can of V8 Juice (for the potassium). I think that will help me build muscle mass.

Even though I've been walking about 2-3 times a week, and doing light weight lifting about 1 time a week, it hasn't really helped build muscle. At this weight of 150 pounds, I'm thin. I've probably lost muscle over the past several months. So, I have to work to get some of it back.

Can You Drink Beer And Still Lose Weight?

Weighed in this morning at 150 pounds, down two pounds from yesterday. Here's what I did yesterday to lose those two pounds...

Morning: 1 small whole wheat tortilla (80 calories)
Morning: 1 can of V8 Juice (70 calories)
Afternoon: 1 package, 10oz, of diced melon mix (120 calories)
Afternoon: 1 can, 4oz, of smoked salmon (208 calories)
Afternoon: 1 can of V8 Juice (70 calories)
Evening: 1 dry pint, cherry tomatoes (70 calories)
Evening: 6 small celery sticks with hot sauce (12 calories)

Total: 630 calories

Exercise: None, except if you count Wii Bowling as exercise.

The last couple of days I've been really craving a beer. I've held myself back quite well. I've been to the grocery store yesterday, and perused their selection of microbrews, and could have easily picked up a six-pack. But I did not.

So it's made me think about a way to incorporate 32oz of dark ales each day and still lose weight. 32oz of that kind of beer would amount to about 500 calories. If I add them to my daily weight loss regimen, I'd consume about 1,100 to 1,300 calories a day.

That's not bad, considering I burn about 7,500 calories a day, with my exercise, activities of daily living, and attempts to keep my metabolism running all day long. The alcohol in the beer, however, will slow that metabolism down, and there's not much nutritional value aside from B vitamins.

But 32oz of beer is also equivalent to gaining 32oz (2 pounds) of weight. Albeit it's only water gain. But I can pee it out each day.

On paper, it's totally doable.

But I guess I'm getting really tempted to get some beer if I'm actually thinking about how to design a "beer diet".

Eliminating Sugar From My Diet

Weighed in this morning at 152 pounds, down three pounds from yesterday.

Here's what I did yesterday to lose those three pounds...

Morning: Two small whole wheat tortillas (160 calories)
Afternoon: 2oz of beef jerky (160 calories)
Late afternoon: 1 can of V8 Juice (70 calories)
Early evening: 1 package, 170g, of blackberries (73 calories)
Evening: 1 can, 6oz, of light tuna in water (180 calories)
Late evening: 1 can of V8 Juice (70 calories)

Total: 713 calories

Exercise: I walked and hiked up some hills outside my neighborhood, about 3.5 miles.

Some of that weight loss was also water loss after having had four beers the day before yesterday.

I'm also doing better to reduce the amount of sugar I consume. So far this year, I've become much more aware of what foods contain sugar, and am opting to avoid them. I've stopped consuming the kefir, because it had sugar added. I no longer use ketchup, steak sauce, or BBQ sauce, because of added sugar. And when I go to the grocery store, I look for sugar in the ingredients.

But I have not eliminated sugar entirely. I still eat a fair amount of fresh fruit, but I have selected fruit low in sugar, such as blackberries and strawberries. And I'm still eating beef jerky, which a lot of contains sugar. But overall, I think I'm able to burn more fat by reducing my sugar intake.

Taco Bell's New Diet Menu Not Bad

Weighed in this morning at 155 pounds, no change from yesterday.

Well, I succeeded in weighing in this morning at the same weight as yesterday. That means, I was able to match my calorie intake with calorie burn. So, I'll be able to spend today and the next couple days trimming down to 150 pounds, my target weight.

I actually consumed very little during the first half of the day. I woke up, and ate a half-pound of strawberries. Then my wife and I went to the San Diego Wild Animal Park, and spend about 2 1/2 hours walking around. There are a lot of hills and canyons there, and you get some good exercise.

We came home, and I had another half-pound of stawberries, and some leftover smoked turkey from Christmas.

Then I hooked up with some friends over beer at our favorite tavern. I had three beers. Those guys had pizza, but I managed to keep off and not eat anything. But they left early in the evening, and I found myself wanting to stay out a little longer.

So, I stopped at a Taco Bell, and tried a few items from their new low-fat menu. Not bad, they taste just like the regular Taco Bell food. Then I stopped at another friend's house, and gobbled down a few chocolate-chip cookies and a bottle of beer.

I really thought the chocolate cookies was going to do me in. But it seems as if they did not.

Gained Two Pounds Yesterday

Weighed in this morning at 155 pounds, up two pounds from yesterday.

Well, I had anticipated weighing at 156 pounds today, but I guess a two pound gain makes me happier considering my day yesterday.

I started the day with my usual two whole wheat tortillas as my breakfast. Then I hooked up with some friends and we rode motorcycles. We stopped for lunch at Ramona Cafe, and I ordered a Chef Salad (which has ham and cheese on it) so I didn't necessarily go fat-free. But I stayed sugar-free, and put only salsa on top for dressing. To drink I had plain iced tea.

We ended the ride back at our usual tavern, and I ordered two beers. Nothing else to eat there.

However, later on I hooked up with my wife and we went to dinner at a Claim Jumper Restaurant. I ordered a rib eye steak with cheese-potato cakes, garlic bread, and another beer. I ate the steak, without steak sauce (steak sauces contain sugar). And I ate the garlic cheese bread. But I did not touch the cheese-potato cakes, and I avoided eating the fried veggies.

So, I think I mitigated my fat intake and sugar intake pretty well. It's tough to eliminate all fat when you eat out, but a lot easier to avoid sugar.

Today my wife and I plan to spend the afternoon at the San Diego Wild Animal Park, mostly to do some walking around the park. If we eat out anywhere, I'll go salad again. I may have a few beers tonight however. If I can weigh in Monday morning at 155 pounds, I'll be happy.

As Predicted I Lost Three Pounds

Weighed in this morning at 153 pounds, down three pounds from yesterday. And here's what I did to lose those three pounds...

Morning: Two small whole wheat tortillas (160 calories)
Afternoon: 4oz of beef jerky (360 calories)
Afternoon: 2 bottles of water (0 calories)
Evening: 1 dry pint of sweet peppers (100 calories)
Evening: 1 can of V8 Juice (70 calories)

Total: 690 calories

Exercise: I walked and hiked up some nearby hills, about 3 miles.

So I said in yesterday's post, I had hoped to lose three pounds by this morning mostly by peeing out all the iced tea and beer that I drank on Thursday. Hence, the three pound loss in one day was largely water loss. Of course that only proves the three pounds I gained on Thursday was mostly water gain.

So today I'm set to hook up with some more buddies and go motorcycle riding again. I'm still trying to stick to my goal to eat fat-fee and sugar-free for lunch, which means I'm looking at a salad with salsa for dressing. But I'll plan to have some beers in the evening.

I'm guessing it'll be another three pound water gain day today.

Oh, and speaking of salsa, I finally launched my new weight loss blog. Check out my latest tip on using salsa as a salad dressing...

New Years Weight Loss Resolution

Weighed in this morning at 156 pounds, up three pounds from yesterday.

So yesterday I did my motorcycle ride with some friends down to San Diego. We had lunch at Old Town Mexican Cafe. I managed to do well food-wise, eating a chicken-taco salad, but did not eat the taco shell. I used their salsa for dressing, and pushed the sour cream aside. To drink, I had two glasses of iced tea, no sweetener.

And I did not touch the chips and salsa either!

After the ride back home, we stopped at our favorite watering hole, and I had three and a half beers. I felt hungry by then, but didn't eat anything there, because all they had was pub food, much of it being fatty. So I told the others that I would be heading over to a sushi bar instead.

We all went there, and I had two spicy tuna hand rolls, and an order of tuna sashimi. I also had an iced tea, and another beer. And I also felt compelled to order more sashimi, but I decided to wait about 15 minutes first, and then decided if I was still hungry. I ended up not ordering anything else. I think by waiting, I allowed my mind to settle down, and lost that urge to eat.

All in all, I believe the three pounds I gained from yesterday is just water gain from the iced teas and beers. Beer itself contains only carbs, but no fat, and very little sugar if any at all. I'm going to spend today peeing that water out, and am looking to do some walking today also. I'm hoping by tomorrow morning, I'll back down to 153 pounds, which is what I was yesterday.

And overall, that's my goal this year. To be able to go riding with my friends, but control my urge to eat by eating low-fat, and as zero-sugar as possible. Whereas last year, I still ended up splurging on high-fat foods.
