Diet Log - July 31, 2008

Weighed in this morning at 190 pounds. Down another pound.

Yesterday I was off of the beef jerky. Had lunch at Olamendi's mexican restaurant, and these carnitas in salsa verde. Came with rice and beans and a salad. I also some chips and salsa. I got pretty full, and didn't eat anything else that day.

But I did walk the dogs for 2 miles, so I got my exercise in.

I'm gonna have a beef jerky day today and see if I can trim off another 2 pounds by tomorrow morning. That will put me at a 7 pound loss for the month of July, which is what I did for May and June each.

Had another person yesterday see me that hadn't seen me in a couple of months, and noted how much more thin I am. I replied that it was my beef jerky diet.

Everytime I say that, it either raises eyebrows and or gets laughs. I don't think people laughing because it sounds like a joke, but because it's just strange.

The truth is that beef jerky is not this magic diet food, anyone can lose weight eating other foods. Rather it's just an equation of calories in versus calories out. It helps to eat a little bit throughout the day, just to keep your metabolism working. Exercise also helps to keep that metabolism going.

But you also need discipline. I can't do this if not for having spent the last four years training myself to eat smaller portions, and eat more salads. I also had to find ways from getting bored, which is largely what kept me searching for food to snack on.

Diet Log - July 30, 2008

Weighed in this morning at 191 pounds.

It's been up and down over the past several days. I got back up to 194 pounds, I think Monday morning. That Saturday and Sunday saw me eating otherwise my typical non-beef jerky diet. I think the problem has been no exercise.

For some reason, I've lost that motivation to exercise. I'm getting trapped into thinking that I can just stick to my diet regimen, and still lose weight.

I need something to kick me in the butt and tell me to go walking.

Today is a non-beef jerky diet day. I'm going motorcycle riding. The plan is to have lunch at Olamendi's in Dana Point, a mexican restaurant that was actually popular with Richard Nixon when he vacationed at his "western white house".

Diet Log - July 25, 2008

Weighed in this morning at 192 pounds, up another two pounds.

Yesterday was a non-beef jerky day. I took a ride with some friends on our motorcycles to Idyllwild for lunch. I had a chef salad and iced-tea. Then we hit up a couple of bars, and I had three beers. After that, I didn't eat anything else.

Also yesterday, the marketing firm for Carl's Jr., a fast food chain in the western USA, sent me coupons for two free breakfast sandwiches and two free Banana Cream Pie Shakes. I figure I'll try that out over the weekend.

Well, I'll be on beef jerky today. And I really need to get back into my exercise pattern.

Diet Log - July 23, 2008

Weighed in this morning at 190 pounds, down two more pounds from yesterday.

I did a half-beef jerky diet yesterday. I had a 3.5oz bag of jerky in the AM, and a small jar of marinated artichoke hearts in the evening. I also drank four cans of V8 throughout the day.

I think what really worked well was the four cans of V8 (I drink the low sodium variety). That stuff is pulpy enough that's its kinda like eating a salad. And I think that did well to keep the metabolism running all day. It's also very low in carbs and fat.

But I'm all out of V8 now. The wife usually does her shopping on Thursdays, so I'm having her replenish my supply.

Oh, did I mention that she also bought a smaller pair of jeans last week? I'm now wearing a size 36. My size 38 jeans lasted me about a month. But consider that I was wearing size 40 jeans for several years.

She hopes that I haven't injured myself with this diet, referring to the "groggy" state of feeling that I wrote about earlier. All I can say at this point is that I feel a lot better after staying away from diet sodas for a week. I think it was the aspartame.

A blogger named Steve Johnson has been writing for the past few months about his efforts to lose weight by eating beef jerky. He runs a beef jerky review site as well, and is using the diet as a way to cut food costs, since companies send him jerky to review.

I'd have to reply back that I agree a beef jerky diet is experimental, and I wouldn't regard this as a healthy weight loss plan by any means. I just love beef jerky, and came up with a plan to lose weight, eat beef jerky, and create a way to promote beef jerky companies by writing reviews.

My weight loss to date is something I could have accomplished eating other foods, and doing the same exercise. This beef jerky diet plan is more of a peculiarity than something to take seriously.

Diet Log - July 22, 2008

Weighed in this morning at 192 pounds. Up two pounds from last Saturday.

That Saturday and Sunday I ended up pigging out. Saturday my wife and I had some breakfast at Yellow Basket, and I ate a ground beef burrito, very yummy. That night we attended a 40th birthday party for a friend of mine. They had catered in all kinds of food, chicken cordon bleu, lasagna, stuffed potatoes, to name a few.

Then Sunday I went motorcycling with some friends, and we had lunch at B's Backyard BBQ in Big Bear Lake. I had the pulled pork sandwich, which is among the best I've ever had. It came with mac & cheese and beans. I had just water to drink. However that evening I hung out with a friend of mine and I had several bottles of his homemade beer.

So by Monday's weigh in, I came to 195 pounds. Yikes!

To say the least, Monday was a beef jerky diet day.

That "grogginess" that I had been talking about? It's been going away. I wonder if it was due to drinking so much diet sodas. I haven't had one for a week now. I still have a few cases left of that stuff.

Diet Log - July 19, 2008

Weighed in this morning at 190 pounds, up a pound from yesterday.

I stuck to the beef jerky diet yesterday, read my review for "Buffalo Bills Beef Jerky - Premium Hickory". I also drank about 3 1/2 cans of V8, and a couple bottles of water.

I'm still getting that "grogginess" I wrote about earlier, and some slight headaches. I'm also feeling some tightness in my neck the past couple of days. And I notice that after sitting down for a long period, and then standing up, my vision blacks out for a few seconds. That grogginess has largely kept me from exercising, though I did mow the lawn yesterday.

I wondered if my blood pressure has shot up due to the high salt content of eating beef jerky. We actually have a blood pressure monitor that my wife bought for herself sometime ago. I took three readings one after another..


Those are all within the normal blood pressure limits. So, I don't think the high sodium has affected me at all.

I've been off of diet sodas for a couple of days now.

I wondered if maybe I have some kind of bacterial infection, because I noticed I feel kinda hot. Albeit, we have't been running the air conditioner in the house until it gets up to about 88 inside. But, I've dealt with hot temperatures all my life living in Southern Califonia. I just don't think that's it.

I'll see about setting up an appointment with my doctor on Monday.

Diet Log - July 18, 2008

Weighed in this morning at 189 pounds, down another pound.

Yesterday was my non-diet day. I say "non-diet" even though I'm still technically dieting. But, I was off the beef jerky yesterday, is what I'm trying to say.

Some friends and I visited one of my favorite lunch spots, Harbor Fish Cafe in Carlsbad. I had the shrimp salad, giving me the veggies that one needs when dieting on beef jerky. I had an iced tea there.

However, afterwards I couldn't resist an offer one of the guys made to visit Barleyhouse in Temecula. They serve about 100 different beer brands. So I had me a couple of beers, an ale and a stout.

Otherwise, I only consumed water from there on out.

Met another friend today that I hadn't seen in a few months. I was about 30 pounds heavier then. He took one look at me and said, "Damn! you lost some serious weight!". Always good to hear from a friend you haven't seen in a while.

Diet Log - July 17, 2008

Weighed in this morning at 190 pounds, down a pound from yesterday.

Stuck to the beef jerky diet again yesterday. I posted reviews for Golden Valley Natural - Original, and Double B - Pecan Smoked.

I didn't do any exercise yesterday. I ended up having to attend a meeting in the early evening, which is when I usually take my walks. I forgot all about the meeting, until an hour before. Otherwise, I had planned to walk.

I ought to try getting my walking done in the morning.

Today is my non-diet day. I'm taking the motorcycle out for a ride with some friends. I really ought to get more salads in me, I need all the veggies I can get.

The last few days, I've been feeling rather "groggy". I'm wondering if it's all the diet sodas I've been drinking. I think I'm going to focus on water, iced tea, and juice for awhile.

Diet Log - July 16, 2008

Weighed in this morning at 191 pounds, down 4 pounds from yesterday.

I think that's the biggest one-day weight drop I've had yet.

I'm guessing that's a combination of fat-loss and water-loss. I did a lot of sweating yesterday. I did my 2 mile walk with the dogs, and did some soaking in the hot tub.

Needless to say, I stuck to the beef jerky diet yesterday.

Day time temperatures here in SoCal are in the upper 90s and low 100s, and I haven't been running the air conditioner until it gets to about 88 degrees inside. I'm trying to save money by keeping it off as long as possible. So, I'm usually sweating at home too.

My wife doesn't like the heat at all, and she'll let the AC run from about 8:00am to about 2:00am, almost a full day, and she'll set it to 70 degrees. So I tell her to go to a Starbucks, and read a book.

I posted reviews for Old Settlers Jerky - Hot, and Buffalo Bills Country Cut - Honey & Pepper. That "Honey & Pepper" is pretty good.

Well, it's another beef jerky diet today. I'm gonna try to do some more walking also. See if I can take it down to 190. I'd like to finish the month at 188 at least, that'll put me at 7 pounds loss for the month.

Diet Log - July 15, 2008

Weighed in this morning at 195 pounds, down a couple from yesterday.

Yesterday, I stuck to the beef jerky diet. Ate about 6 oz in all, with 2oz in the morning, 2oz in the afternoon, and 2oz at night. Mostly diet sodas, and a V8.

A couple of days ago my mom called, and said she wants to come visit around early September. I said no problem. She's always been nagging me to lose weight, and expressing her fear about me dying young. I'll probably kill myself on that motorcycle before I die of any other disease.

She seems to blame herself for my weight gain. Growing up, she liked to use me as a way to get rid of excess food. She'll cook up a bunch of food for dinner, and then have me eat everything up with the excuse that she didn't want to have to put the leftovers into the fridge. So, I'd always get stuffed.

It was ok as a kid because I always managed to burn it off and stay skinny.

However, that habit lingered inside me, and as my metabolism slowed down, and I entered into a life of sitting at a desk all day long, that habit put a lot of pounds on me.

So she blames herself for all that.

Anyways, I'll see if I can get to around 185 pounds by then, which I should be able to at my current rate. I just gotta stay focused.

Diet Log - July 14, 2008

Weighed in this morning at 197 pounds, up a few pounds from the last weigh in.

I pigged out this weekend.

Weekends are my non-diet days, but I went overboard and stuffed myself.

If you recall from the last post, I was heading out on a ride to Pala Casino for lunch buffet. I did ok there, only had two plates, or actually 1 1/2 plates, since the second one was only half-full. But that evening, the wife and I went to Arby's, and I had three of those Beef & Cheddars.

Sunday, I had a bag of beef jerky in the morning, to kick start the metabolism. In the afternoon, a bunch of us rode to Tom's Farms to hang out, and I had just Diet Cokes. But that night I got really hungry, and wanted to take the wife out for dinner. But we stayed home!

Except, I got a call from a friend of mine who had just got back from a month-long vacation. So I headed out to meet him at this bar & grill, just to chat over a beer, and as soon as I started smelling the food there, the hunger pains started killing me. I ended up with a chicken-fried steak, mashed potatoes, and a 23oz beer.

And to top it off, I haven't been exercising.

So I gotta kick myself in the butt and get me back on track.

It's funny, I gain a few pounds, and I feel fat.

Men's Health Magazine Names Bridgford Beef Jerky as Best

Men's Health Magazine recently announced is "2008 Men's Health Nutrition Awards", recongizing 131 different grocery foods with top honors.

In the beef jerky division, Bridgford Beef Jerky won top billing as the best beef jerky. Here's what Men's Health has to say...
Tender, smoky, and not saturated in sugar. This blend of seasoning and premium cut beef will leave you wanting more.

Per ounce: 60 calories, 8 g protein, 5 g carbs, 0.5 g fat
Ok, they certainly didn't say anything worthwhile.

I also note that Bridgford has won taste test awards from Chefsbest, an award designated by the American Culinary Institute, though not necessarily for its beef jerky.

Men's Health magazine says that they looked at foods found in the grocery stores, hence is the reason why a large national brand won top honors. This is one of the reasons why I started "Best Beef Jerky", so that I could put the large national brands on a level playing field with the small gourmet brands.

THE IMPORTANT POINT is that a health magazine included beef jerky as a category among healthy foods.

Diet Log - July 12, 2008

Weighed in this morning at 194 pounds, down 1 from yesterday.

Stuck to the beef jerky diet yesterday. Read my reviews for Enjoy Beef Jerky - Hot, and Buffalo Bills Country Cut - Barbecue.

Today is my normal non-diet day. I'm heading out for another motorcycle ride with some friends. We're supposed to hit up Pala Casino for lunch, which is a buffet. I'm wondering how I'm supposed to eat in moderation with so much great chow available for all you can eat.

Admittedly, I haven't been exercising much. I should be doing my 2 mile walks about 3 times per week, but have only done about 1 every 7-10 days.

I can tell I'm losing weight though. That 2-day ride to Santa Maria and back made my butt sore. I kept feeling my tail bone, and it didn't like the seat on my Harley. I never really had that problem before.

My wife says, "Now you know how I feel!"

Weighed in this morning at 195 pounds, back up another 2 from the last report.

Got back home last night from my two-day motorcycle ride to Santa Maria. Had a great time riding the back roads over the mountains.

I did some eating, not a great deal, but had plenty to drink. Places we stopped for food and drink...

I got the munchies late last night here at home, so I found a small jar of "Hearts of Palm" in the fridge, and depleted it.

I found some brands of jerky at this one store in Pine Mountain Club, CA. They're national brands, but those I haven't found in my home town. They look rather low-budget.

I even managed to get a little exercise in, after we hiked about 1/2 mile round trip to this waterfall, "Nojoqui Falls", just south of Solvang.

Got stung by a bee on the back of my neck while riding down a road. I'm not allergic to them, aside from just a slight swelling, it has pretty much gone away as of this writing. But it did make it a little uncomfortable to twist my neck to the left.

Diet Log - July 9, 2008

Weighed in this morning at 193 pounds, no change from Sunday.

Actually, it's been an up-and-down adventure since that previous post Sunday morning. Later that afternoon, the wife and I had lunch at a Rodrigo's Mexican Restaurant in Temecula. I had me the "carnitas hash", which is carnitas, potatoes, peppers, and eggs, kinda put together. Pretty good when you pour some of the restaurant's salsa on top. Wash it all down with a couple of margaritas, and it makes for a great meal.

And later that same day, we had ice creams at Dairy Queen!

That resulted in me gaining two pounds to 195 the next morning.

Then, Monday afternoon we celebrated my mother-in-law's birthday with lunch at Ritchie's Diner in Murrieta. I don't know if it's possible to "celebrate" a mother-in-law's birthday actually. But, we did have lunch on that occasion. I had their tri-tip salad. Later that night, I posted the review for Buffalo Bills Country Cut - Teriyaki.

That took me down to 194 pounds on Tuesday morning (yesterday).

So I stayed with the beef jerky diet yesterday, and posted reviews for Golden Valley Natural Beef Jerky - Peppered, and for Buffalo Bills Western Cut - Cajun. (I post-dated the Buffalo Bills review for this morning)

That took me down to the 193 pounds for this morning's weigh-in.

And with that, I'm off on a two-day motorcycle ride to Santa Maria and back. A friend and I are doing a scenic ride along the backroads through towns like Santa Paula, Ojai, Santa Barbara, and Solvang, mostly to enjoy the curvy scenic roads that "riding purists" love. The next day we'll head inland through smaller towns like New Cuyama, Pine Mountain Club, and Cuddy Valley. All of these places are filled with great eats.

I'll keep my eye out for some beef jerky.

I wouldn't be surprised if Friday morning I weigh in at 197.

Sidenote: On the left-side of this blog, I changed the "Starting Weight" from 211 to 220. I guess this has been a source of confusion for some people. The "211" represented my weight when I launched this blog. The "220" is what I weighed when I started this diet. I agree the 220 makes more sense. I guess when I launched this blog, the 211 sounded more sensible because it coincided with my first Diet Log of April 25.

Diet Log - July 6, 2008

Weighed in this morning at 193 pounds. Down another pound.

Had lunch yesterday at a Buffalo Wild Wings, with 6 wings, a pulled pork sandwich, fries, and Diet Coke. I love that "Asian Zing" sauce they have, sweet and spicy, with a medium touch of heat.

Later in evening I chugged down a 1.75l bottle of lemonade. That's all I ate.

No exercise.

Today, the wife and I are going out to Sunday brunch together.

It's wierd that I can lose a pound by eating what I ate at Buffalo Wild Wings, but find it so tough to lose a pound in the couple of weeks prior to that. I know it's a metabolism thing. I don't know if my metabolism was running a lot longer yesterday, than on a typical beef jerky diet. Yesterday, I only ate once that day, for lunch. You might say, however, that I ate enough heavy food to keep my metabolism running a lot longer.

Diet Log - July 5, 2008

Weighed in this morning at 194 pounds. Finally lost a pound!

While yesterday I said that we were going to do a BBQ with my mother in law, it turned out my wife wasn't feeling well, so we cancelled that. I ended up sticking to the beef jerky diet.

Funny thing about that Wal-Mart jerky, I've been eating so much good jerky the past month, that it made Wal-Mart's taste so mediocre. I really got a wake-up call on how "factory" that stuff is.

Today is my normal "non-diet" day.

I've been seeing this coupon for Carl's Jr (a fast food burger joint) laying on a table in our family room, for a "buy 1 get 1 free", jalapeno chicken sandwich. It's been calling my name, I may finally answer it.

I guess that's how I'll celebrate losing a pound after struggling for a couple of weeks.

Diet Log - July 4, 2008

Weighed in this morning at 195 pounds, still the same weight.

Yesterday was spent on another non-diet day, with a shrimp salad and clam chowder at Harbor Fish Cafe in Carlsbad. Also had a beer at this irish pub in Fallbrook. The rest of the day I drank V8 and Diet Coke.

Today (Friday) is normally a beef jerky diet day, but the wife and I are supposed to hook up her mom for some BBQ, being it's Independence Day. Then comes the weekend which are usually non-diet days.

As tough as it has been to break through this 195 pound barrier, I keep thinking that I'll be gaining a few pounds from this holiday weekend.

I've finished up my beef jerky reviews for the House of Jerky brand. It came just in time, yesterday I received a shipment of sample jerkies from Choo Choo R Snacks, Inc., who makes the Buffalo Bills and the Country Cut brand. They sent me enough jerky to give me about a few weeks of reviews.

Gotta say that I learned to become a big fan of House of Jerky, it really is that good. I've had their jerky before over the years, and always found it to be good, but I never really appreciated it until after I analyzed each variety carefully in writing these detailed reviews.

Diet Log - July 2, 2008

Weighed in this morning at 195 pounds, still stuck at the same number.

Stuck to the beef jerky diet yesterday. Read my reviews for House of Jerky - Buffalo Black Pepper, and House of Jerky - Venison Black Pepper.

I also tried experimenting with my V8. I decided to spice it up a bit by dropping some spoonfuls of salsa into it. Tastes good, but I don't like the chunks. I'll have to experiment in other ways.

One conflict I'm having to deal with is the influx of free food being sent to me for my review. I also write Junk Food Blog, which talks about all the great junk food that we as a country are in love with. So I get plenty of free samples from several junk food manufacturers.

With my income not looking so great, I feel compelled to eat for free. But I know it will put a wrench into my beef jerky diet.

I know I have 3 non-diet days each week to work with. However, on those days I tend to go out with my wife, or with my friends. It's the only time I get out of the house, actually. So, I end up dining at establishments.

I told the wife to just stop buying me food from the grocery store.

Diet Log - July 1, 2008

Weighed in this morning at 195 pounds, still no change.

I intended to stick to the beef jerky diet yesterday, but ended up eating some other stuff later that day. In the morning I ate a package of Divine Bovine Honey Teriyaki.

The plan was to eat another package of jerky later in the afternoon. Instead, I ate some pickled okra, about 4 pieces. Actually, pickled okra is pretty tame stuff for dieting, only 10 calories for those 4 pieces, and just 4 grams of carbs. Still rather salty though.

But then later that night, I got the munchies pretty bad. I ended up finding a package of Gallo Salame & Provolone Cheese Snack in my fridge. That's 440 calories for the package, 34 grams of fat, and just 4 grams of carbs.

So my caloric intake for the day was still not much different than having two bags of beef jerky.

And I also walked 2 1/2 miles that day.

Yet, I still remain at 195 pounds.
